Is $8.50/board foot for African Mahogany, (very highly figured, exquisitly shaded) a fair price?

Thanks lou, I was worried those guys'd been looking at me like Mr. Haney used to look at Mr. Douglas on Green Acres, when he was tryin to sell him a bill of goods
Star, Be carefull with the grain. African mahogany tends to be hairy so be carefull when selecting.
Yessir I inspected one of the rough edges and noticed that hairiness you describe, I'm expecting particularly challenging working and finishing sessions in my not too distant future.
African Mahogany is easy to work with. It sands to a very smooth surface. In my experience it dose not absorb finishes very well, but that is just me talking. I haven't ever heard anyone else say that. I also work with Oak mostly, and its open grain soaks finish up very well.

Here in Ohio I just purchased 50 bd.ft of African mahogany for $5.55 and two boards of Honduras at $7.75/bd.ft. African is more brittle and does not work as well as Honduras.
sounds like you got a good deal, from what I hear, and certainly a better deal than I did, but then you got a much higher quantity than I did that's probably a factor
Mrbird, where exactly did you get the hondoras mahogany? I'm looking for it
Thanx, Lou
Bought it from Homestead Hardwoods in Vickory, Ohio. I don't know if they ship or not. I go to their yard and haul it in my truck. Check out their web site. http://www.kilndriedhardwoods.com tel: 419-684-9582, sorry no 800 number
I just got back from Armstrong Millworks in Highland Michigan where I picked up a load of Honduran mahogany. 4/4,6/4 and 8/4. 12 to 16' long and up to 9" wide. They have a very large selection. They are near the intersection of M 59 and US 23 about 6 miles north of I-96 and Brighton Mi.
How much $8.50 for Khaya, WOOOW that has gone through the roof. Couple of years ago I paid $2.20 for 10/4 quarter sawn pattern grade. Purchased about 2,000bf and have 800bf left. You should look for a better price. Contact this guy. This is not where I purchased but I know a couple of boat builders have purchased from this importer.
