A few days ago I sat on my workshop stool and it broke apart. It had already endured many breakings and repairs, so I will throw it out a make a new one. Since its just for the shop, I’d like to make it out of inexpensive materials. I’ve got some one inch soft maple sitting around that I thought I could use for the top and stretchers (or rungs if you like) but I need to get something thicker for the top. I would especially like to use a darker wood, as I can use the scraps for small bits of contrast on boxes. I’m leaning towards walnut but would love some input from you guys.

Jeremy,
"Good cheap wood for stool"? Is this a new poo softener? Something you eat when constipated? Yuk. Or are you wanting to make an exchange of poo for wood? I am soooo confused!!!
OK, I got that out of my system! (Get it?)
My moniker, prosopis, is the Latin for mesquite. The heartwood is dark and dense. It is abundant and cheap since it is sold as firewood around here. Good luck on the project. Sorry for the tasteless jokes. Not really sorry.

Try butternut for a darker wood that's relatively easy to carve and cheap besides..
Not sure where you're located (profile info's missing), but ash would be a good call, too. Not what I'd call easy to carve, but it's quite cheap, and they make baseball bats outta the stuff.
