I’m making some pantry cabinets out of red oak (combination of solid wood and plywood). Can anyone recommend a decent durable finish that has a fairly easy, low-tech application technique? I don’t have a sprayer, so it will have to be either brush-on or rub-on.
Not too particular about the end color, we’re not trying to match anything.
Thanks!

Brush on shellac, build a fairly thick film (several coats), then sand smooth and finish with wax. Easy as can be and faster than varnish.

Thanks for the tip. I just noticed the other thread going on with Jon Arno on finishing red oak. Wow, never knew there could be that much technique involved....
