Here's a very helpful article (in PDF format) from American WWer. Presents quite a bit of detailed information.

Thanks for that link! I ordered an MT-90 just now and the lady who took my order couldn't have been nicer.

Although it's more than $100, I'm very satisfied with my pinless Wagner, which you can buy directly from the manufacturer.

For those who are interested in ordering a Wagner direct, here's the link:

I have a Wagner. Most over the $100 mark are OK from what I've seen, but that wasn't your question was it?
I also have a Timber-Check for under $100 I use for newly acquired lumber. Won't give you fine increments, but gets the job done admirably.
Whatever you get, check the stock in various places and you will discover how the moisture is not even from stem to stern and star-board to what-ever. This ia a valuable "tell" in getting it to the point where you feel it's ready to be worked.

Thank you all for the input...
Looks like I'll have to spend more then a hundred dollars to find a good moisture meter.
I do seem to remember several years back, FWW had an article on building a moisture meter...
need to look through all my back issues.
Thanks again
Issue 53 (Jul/Aug 1985).
Thanks Ben..
Found it last night, look complicated to put together

I built that moisture meter and still have it. It's not the most convenient thing to use as mine ended up in a 5X7 card file box. It does work well and the issue had a nice table to convert the readings for different species. At this point if I were to do it over again, I'd just go out and buy one.
