Guys,
would it be a good idea if the site allowed us to mark our locations on google map which would then allow us to see wood workers in our area.
I’ve not met many woodworkers here in Ireland (practically none of similar intent) and this would certainly benefit me. I’d like to network so as to access finer quality materials and such.
I’m not sure how much work would be involved in setting it up but how could this idea be passed onto the guys running the site?
Or is this a none runner?

The concept at least, of what you're suggesting sounds like a good idea to me; a precursor to this might be filling out info. in our profiles. Yes there are privacy issues/concerns these days but I think this can be taken to extremes. If folks at least entered state/province, etc. and country then a search mechanism within FWW might be nice.
As to Google Maps, I just entered my street name and Zip Code and it found me, well my street anyway.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
I'm always amazed at people's willingness to post pictures of their tools, especially on forums like sawmillcreek where people use their real names. It seems like an invitation to burglars for anybody with a semi-unique name.
By marking a location on the map, when a person posts a picture of their $XX,000 shop we'll know exactly where it's located without any hassle. I'm not interested in having access to that information about you, let alone disclosing it about me.

I have to agree with you Matt. My shop has some of the highest value items in it, and is probably one of the least secure places on my property. Giving someone the exact location of my shop isn't really high on my list of priorities.
I used to really enjoy working with my shop (garage) door open, but I've slowly become more concerned with security. It would really suck if someone walked away with one of my handplanes when I ducked inside to get a drink.
In the end knots is a great place to connect with people outside your local community, but I wouldn't rely on using it to connect with people that are close. I also wouldn't want local knots people (that I may only know by alias) dropping by unannounced.
I do think people should update their profiles to give general geographic areas, some questions really depend on location.
FRAPPR.COM Check it out.
Lads, I hear what you're all saying. I never though of that element and I agree. A general location would be enough I'm sure so some way to bundle these together would be helpful. As I've said, I'm keen to meet woodworkers here in Ireland. I think that we're a rare breed in this country...Eoin
Darn! There's a forum somewhere that has a world map, and members can give their location which puts a virtual "pin" in the map. I've tried to find it again, but no luck.
As to privacy concerns, it can always be a voluntary thing.

Try FRAPPR.com
Hmmm, this idea seems to be a none runner. What a shame? Unless somebody has a similar idea that might cover the security issue...
Try out FRAPPR.com. You will find me there. No street address, just a town name. Anywhere in the world can be own this map. Just log in and place your "site" on the map. I'll be looking for you.
"Hmmm, this idea seems to be a none [sic] runner." In general, this group leans toward privacy in many ways. As to a security issue, I don't see that there is one, if people simply indicate what city they live in, and it's all voluntary.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
So it would appear and thats to be respected.
What I mean by similar concept to GoogleMap is one where our general addresses could be shown somewhere that would also indicate others in the same area.
The word "address" puts a stop-sign in my mind. I don't mind people knowing what town or city I live in, but address? Nope, nope, nope.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I agree, my web site does not have a address for that very reason! Darn google drive by was done with my garage door open, of all the nerve.... showing my long haired son off standing in the middle of my chaos!
Bottom line is IF I really want to find you, it just is'nt that hard.... and having been robbed 3 times at my house, I know it is just waiting to happen again. No if buts or ands. <!----><!----><!---->

Well the only tools of much $ in my shop weigh from three to six hundred LB each. I would just love to see some guy running down the street with one of them in his arms.

Nah I know what nay sayers mean I wouldn't want to be pin pointed. Maybe just put up your county what not and ask people to privately e-mail for further info if near by.

That would be a little TMI in my opinion. With Googles' "street view" capability, you can see that I was a bit overdue to mow my yard. - lol
A couple of months ago, I gave a customer my address so she could come over to discuss a project. When she emailed that I had a really nice house in a really nice neighborhood, I asked if she had driven by already. That's when I found out about "street view". - lol
