I’m working on a computer work station with a return desk on the side. Made all the drawers first (4 file drawers, two smaller drawers) then went to work building the drawer cases. Everything went well with the computer case and drawers but today after completing the return desk drawer case.. THAT SINKING FEELING! I discovered that the case wasn’t wide enough for the file drawers and full extension slides. I discovered this while the case was glued up and clamped and I began installing the slides. I was shy a little over 1/4 inch. My first thought was to unclamp and hammer one of the sides off and remake the bottom, top and divider. But I was a good 45 minutes into glue up.. so I found another way, which thankfully, worked! I dug out my router.. scribed the width of the slides into the cab sides.. and plowed out trenches on both sides.. countersinking the slides. Not pretty.. but my drawers are in! (Even with dust mask and eye protection, I glubbed up plenty of router dust with my head inside that case..but I had to pay SOMEHOW.. lol)

I still measure 3 times as I have had those same errors when I started a long time ago. I pay close attention to detail and concentrate on the task at hand. A simple distraction can cause a major error that takes creative repair or having to go back to ground zero. Ha..Don't take anything for granted..
You will probaly be wiser in the future.. Good luck!

Sarge.. you hit the nail right on the head. When I made the first drawer cab I measured carefully and took into account the depth of the dadoes, and added that to the drawer dimensions before I cut the top, bottom and divider. I failed to do that with the second cab.. even though I had made a mental note to do so. But the passage of three days made my attention drift and, BOOM.. major brain f--t. Part of what I like about woodworking is the solitary nature of the craft. You and the tools and the materials and no one or nothing else. You would think that in a distraction free environment one could really stay focused. What I really believe happened to me was over confidence. After all, I've been doing this for about four months now. LOL

Someone who wouldn't make a mistake like that cut a leg for a new belt-disc sander stand 1/2" short last nite about 11 PM. Now, a 30 year WW like me doesn't usually do any cutting that late at nite. Too tired for attention span. In a hurry to get the sander up and running, that person got distracted by a 16 yr. old teen-age son. Rule 1 is I don't cut when I'm tired. Rule 2 is my family is not allowed to come into the shop when a motor is running.
The new leg I finished at 1 AM is the same lenght as the other three. Ha..ha.. Yes, the solitude is great. It's rare I make a mistake, even rarer I tell somone about it. Grin<>
Hey Ron, guess us old guys need to stick to buying the one lotto ticket and buying our furniture with the winnings. he..he..

Sarge.. it takes a big man to admit a mistake. And it takes an even bigger man to raise a 16 year old son!

I brung him in, at times I feel I might have to take him out. ha..just kidding.. Actually, when he hit about 13 I began taking a serious look at the Federal Witness Protection Program. grin<>
Actually, I'm very proud of him. We kid a lot and have a pretty good relationship.
Thanks..

Sometimes I think that all you need to raise a teenager is a sense of humor. If you take those contemptuous glances and replies seriously, instead of for what they are, a natural part of growing up and separating from mom and dad.. your blade will spin right off the arbor.

Agreed. I learned to lighten-up as my approach used to be very disciplinary. It works much better. One day I realized I did stupid things when I was that age. I wouldn't tell him that though. He thinks I used to hunt dinosaurs with a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. Funny thing is, I did. he..he..
Have a good evening..

You mean Im not the only one things like that happen to :)
At Darkworks cut to size made to burn......Putty isnt a option
I did something real similar when I redid our bathroom. I took out the existing medicine cabinet.
Then I built a new cabinet body out of solid oak. Made it exactly the same size as the old cabinet so I could use the existing mirrored doors and euro style hinges.
Looked great until I went to install the doors. I'd made it exactly the same 'outside' dimensions. But, I'd used 3/4" wood, they'd used 1/2" MDF. Inside was 1/2" too narrow.
After some head scratching I routed out 1/2" pockets in the top of the cabinet for the hinges to set in.
Looks like I planned it that way. Aren't routers great?

Isn't that the Idea?? Make goof corrections look like they were planed?? I try to pass mine off that way. I always told my kids that a mistake is an opportunity for creative thinking. I have had my share of creative thinking opportunities.
