Am about to finish a shaker-like chest. Would like to use shellac with toner to get a rich brown. On my samples can get the tone etc that I want, but the grain shows through and looks horrible. The problem is real acute on the turned legs as the grain is “opened” The fuinishing books ( Jeff Jewet) addresses use of gain filler, but only on flat surfaces. So, can I use gain filler on the turned legs? If so how? Have not yet tried gain filler on a flat surface.
Is there some other finish that would deal with the grain? Thanks

You certainly can use filler on turned pieces, but I'd practice on some flat boards first. Get the feel for the right consistency (something like cream) and how long to let it set before wiping down (depends on the weather a lot). When you feel you've got the hang of filler, use it on everything, including the turned parts.
