I came across some free wood; recently bulldozed live oak, about 14″ diameter. I bucked some into 24″ lengths, and it was still wet enough to drip when cut.
A day later, I saw some checking. I slopped on a couple thick coats of oil based rustoleum. Was this a waste of time? Am I painting firewood?
I don’t turn, but I know some folks who do. Is this stuff worth fussing over, or should I leave it in the yard until it’s ready to cook brisket for me?

No wood expert here BUT.. I had to cut down several old Maple trees several years ago... Cut the logs.. Dripping wet.. Very Late fall and hardly any sap.. Think it was just water.. Anyway.. I sealed the ends of the logs with paraffin wax (all I had around to use).. Several coats..
EVERY LOG had cracks???? Gee.. Ever try splitting dry maple logs?? Damn near impossible! I can't even use it for fire wood!
