Greene & Greene Rocker Plans
In “Arts and Crafts Furniture You Can Build”, pg. 19, and in “In the Craftsman Style”, pg. 22, there is a rocker that I believe was built by or inspired by Greene & Greene. I like the Maloof style, but my wife doesn’t (too contemporary).
We’ve finally found this Greene and Greene rocker that we both like. Does anyone know of a plan for the Greene & Greene rocker? I could make it from the picture (I’m halfway through a sheet music cabinet for our daughter inspired by a picture), but I’d sure like the easy way way out, for a change.
I’ve looked at all the plan sites on the internet that I’m aware of, but haven’t seen this rocker.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've never seen plans either, though I'd dearly love to make one of them. If you find something, let me know, or post the plans here.
Incidentally, at a Fine Woodworking NW gallery in Seattle recently, I saw a side chair that's a close copy of one from the Blacker house. Maker wanted $3200 for one chair. Ouch!!!

John
I saw your message first on the August Home site, so I posted there first. Here is another copy of what I posted:
I recently pulled the August 2000 issue of American Woodworker, #81, out of the shop dust and have been reading through it. There is a VERY (Yes, I said VERY) nice Greene and Greene inspired side table in the issue. Lots of nice details. Anyway, it's not a rocker but might look good next to one. At the end of the article they mention the following references for more information on Greene and Greene that might have what you are looking for:
Greene and Greene, Furniture and Related Designs by Randell Makinson
Peregrine Smith, Inc. 1979
Greene and Greene Masterworks by Bruce Smith and Alexander Vertikoff
Archetype Press, Inc. 1998
The Gamble House (626) 793-3334

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Craig. Since I can't find the plans I'm resigned to (once more) starting something from scratch. Most stuff turns out pretty good--but hope springs eternal for a short cut (plans)!
Thanks for researching the great references. I've got Makinson's gorgeous book on the Blacker house, but didn't realize he'd done a furniture volume. I just ordered a used copy.
Cheers,

Which rocker are you talking about ? There are a few different ones. Which house was is designed for? I have studied Greene and Greene designs and have made many contemporary versions of my favorites but have never come across any detail drawing except the interpretations that others have done for different magazines. I have about 6 or 7 books on Greene and Greene none of which contain any detailed drawings but your best bet would be "Furniture and Related Designs" by Randell Makinson. On pages 58 and 70 there are scale drawings but only a vague side view. On pages 72 and 96 there are photos of finished rockers. Both are very nice. There seems to be a total absence of any detailed drawing and my guess for that would be the makers took care of those details. Charles Greene, who did the majority of the furniture designs, worked with two masters craftsmen Peter and John Hall who were also brothers. They collaborated closely on designs and had a great respect for each other. Because of this I think Charles presented drawing of what he wanted the pieces to look like and the details he wanted to include. How it was actually constructed was probably left up to the Hall brothers. This is just speculation but would explain the absence of any detailed drawings. I know this doesn't help much in the way of drawing for you to follow but may help explain why you can't find many.
