The children have graduated and are engaged in productive careers! So now it’s time to start some more serious woodworking. I have built kayak paddles for my own use as well as two skin-on-frame kayaks.
We are moving to an historic house in Mobile and building a small woodworking shop (16′ x 22′). I have to build a kitchen, entertainment center and closet as “payback” for shop and tools. After that “stitch & glue” kayaks.
I hope to attend the Folk School in October on Kitchen cabinets as well as Arrowmont for furniture; I’m number 1 on both wait lists.
This forum and site are a wonderful resource and I look forward to participating.

Welcome to the forum and you're right, it is a great source for information and support. It sounds like you are off to a good start by getting instruction in cabinet making and furniture work. Sounds like a great plan and you have the facility, tools and skills with tools to make the job go easier. Having totally renovated several houses and built all of the cabinetry, I can envision the work that lies ahead: it is both challenging and rewarding. Good luck and welcome -

Hastings,
Welcome to Knots. Welcome to a group that you may have much in common with. I also have three kids who have finished college, married and are off seeking their fortunes. Like you, that gives me more time for making sawdust and the furniture that sometimes accompanies it. You say you are going to have a small shop of 16' x 22'. I am VERY VERY jealous. My shop is so small that when I want to use my workbench, I have to put my contractor saw on its end. (not really, but almost).
This is a great place to ask questions when they come up. You usually get feedback within hours. Often get varied opinions too. That keeps it interesting.
You'll find the "Knots Gallery" a fun place. That's where folks post photos of their latest projects. Photos are actually posted in all of the forums, but that is what the Gallery focusses on. If you get a chance, post a photo of one of your projects.
By the way, there is another new poster now, who is from Italy. His name is Alastar Moody, and the name of the thread is "Hello Everybody". Why not respond to his message and tell him that you and he just joined at the same time. This is a good place to meet people. Where else could a kayak maker from Alabama get to talk to a wooden clock maker from Rome?
Enjoy.

Measure your output in smiles per board foot.
Welcome, and here everone teaches and learns.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to woodworking. Sounds like you've already gotten enough taste of sawdust to know that you're going to love it.
Good luck with the shop and congrats on successfully completing the "in house" stage of parenthood!
