I bought the P650 a couple of weeks ago and have used it for one project and of course some playing around. It is really amazing that a 2", 23ga pin, so small that it is easy to overlook the hole in wood, will really shoot completely into hardwood. I am working on remodeling our kitchen and needed to add some oak filler strips to the side of a cabinet to make it fit the gap to the wall. I am using 3/4" red oak and the strips were almost 1 1/4" wide. I cut them to fit, added a little Titebond, held them in place and shot 2" pins into the side of the filler strips to attach to the face frame. 100# of air pressure as recommended and the pins sink in beyond flush and the holes just seem to dissapear. I am impressed!
In my playing around, I mean testing, I did notice that like all other small nail guns you must be observant of wood grain because the pins will curve to follow the grain if you are not careful.
I have other guns, a 15 ga DeWalt and a cheap 18ga, and the quality of the Grex product is readily apparent. The gun looks, feels , and operates great. I really talked to myself for quite a while before I bought the gun because of the price, but I read a few reviews of the Grex and other 23ga pinners and it was apparent that the Grex was what I wanted. Not a cheap product, but definately worth the money IMHO.
Thanks for your input, it is a lot of money!! but it sounds like it is worth it, Im off to find the best price and package
thanx again willy
I went with the Max a few years ago. It shoots all the different size pins without any changes to the magazine. Nice pointy, no mar tip that fits anywhere, anti-dry fire. The most expensive pinner out there. Cadex has a similar model for a little less money, I don't know if they are identical. I give the Max a five star rating.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Thanx for your input , will look into those nailers, before I lay down a few hundred bucks
thanx again willy
Willy,
I bought the Grex P650L a few months back to use for trimming out my house. Its been great for gluing and pinning outside miters and also for assemblying my header casing pieces. With this pinner, I have no fear of splitting narrow pieces. I also tested it with the 2 inch pins in conjunction with my 16G finish nailer for nailing up the casing on a few of the doors. It seems to hold well.
As someone else posted, you have to becareful with grain direction or the longer pins might deflect. Jams have been occasional, but not often, the onboard hex wrench allows you to clear them quickly. Lastly, don't forget to be careful, once the saftey trigger is pulled, you can play nail gun darts with the it! I had a couple of close calls.
I got the Cadex a couple of years ago - shoots up to 1 3/8" pins. Made in the same factory as Grex and looks almost identical.
I have had very good success with it in Oak, pine and MDF with every shot slightly set and no marks from the firing pin.
Watch out for the safety trigger though. Instead of a pressure safety at the tip like most other guns, it has a second trigger to pull first (with middle finger); that way the gun can reach into smaller spaces. Problem is, you tend to keep the safety held down all the while you are working with it, so it is easy to fire before you are ready.
Don't ask how I know, but from a few inches away it can easily shoot a pin 3/4" into my...I mean someone's... thumb.
