Has anyone here had experience with one of Grizzly’s lesser expensive bench top planers? Thanks for any thoughts-

I don't have any experience with them, but if you're talking about their 12.5" planers....unless they've added a head-lock, I'll venture to guess they'd be a waste of money. They've always performed very, very poorly in the various magazine reviews, and I've seen maybe 3 people in the past couple years post extreeeeeme disappointment in the amount of snipe they get with the benchtop Grizzly planer.
If you're short on cash, look for the Delta 12.5", it's only $216 at Amazon. Snipe is minimal when adjust correctly, and it's fine for hobby use.

The Deltas are having trouble pulling wood through?
I have not had any trouble with mine. I think the problems are with the 2-speed 13" Delta, not the older 12.5" models. It has something to do with a dead spot in the switch that controls the speed.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thank you for your response-
Evening FG..
And there can be a dead spot on the Delta 13" 2 speed. In the last 3 years I have found it about 4 times which the last was about 3 hours ago. The first time it happened, I was puzzled and stumbled on the problem and fix. The 2nd time I was slightly annoyed. The 3 rd time I was not as concerned. The 4th time (to-night) I just considered it SOP (standard operating procedure) and took evasive action as I can find the "sweet spot" quickly at this point cause I got the feel.
And when you hit the sweet spot the planer just slices hard-wood (without snipe) like one of those "veggie-matics" turned loose at the Farmer's Market! ha.. ha...

Maybe it was your post I read that in? I saw it just the other day, a couple people had experienced it. Amazing, because as long as that planer's been out, that's the first I'd heard of the problem. Sounds like Delta needs to make a little adjustment somewhere!
I'm really happy with the 12.5" they make. Granted, it wouldn't hold up to a ton of production stuff, but for a benchtop, can't imagine much better than the results it gives.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
To be honest FG, I was not aware others had a problem either. I suspected that mine arose as one day when I first had it, I forgot to change speeds while running. This is only the 4th time in over 3 years since I got it that the problem occurred and if my memory serves me correct, each may have been after I forgot to flip the speed switch when running and not before.
Dead spot is kind of a spotty term, but appropriate in this case for the most part to describe it. Each time I have forgotten in haste and changed speed in "Off", the flip button appears to click positive to the other speed. But.... no power! After switching it firmly a few times, its releases from "what appears" to be the correct position about another 1/2" to "what is" the correct position and down the highway you go!
I don't know if that is what others have experienced or related to the origin of when it appears to happen regarding the speed change in the "off" position before instead of after. In case someone gets a government grant to do research on this, an offer of a new 12" jointer would get my sworn affidavit in writing. ha.. ha...

AhHah! Such a picky procedure, but seemingly necessary. Thanks for the details. Have a great Thanksgiving, Sarge!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
