A few weeks ago, I picked up a Grizzly 8″ jointer–the G0586 model. I didn’t get the carbide insert cutterhead. Well, I finally got it together, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s a winner.
Setup was pretty easy, although getting the motor wired was kind of awkward. Blades didn’t require any adjustment. Tables are nominally flat (I didn’t get out the feeler gauges), and the fence is hefty. There’s about a quarter or a third turn of backlash in the depth adjustment wheels, but I can deal with that.
I made some test cuts in 7″ wide hard maple, and it cuts easily. Jointed surfaces are glass smooth; shorter boards kind of stick to the outfeed table a little when you try to lift them off.
Since I picked it up at the warehouse, I can’t really speak to the delivery problems that have been mentioned before. Sales and customer service staff were helpful–I had to push back my pickup date a few weeks, and they had no problem working that out for me.
Price is still $595 (shipping $144). In my opinion, it’s a good machine and a good deal.

I also just recently purchased the 586 jointer and I love it. Though when I got it, I had a problem with the cutterhead guard. The guard would hit the rabbit table when swinging back to it normal position. I called grizzly and they sent me a new shaft. They sent me the wrong part and I had to wait another week. After I received the correct part, it still was not working correctly. Another call to Grizzly and they sent out a new cutterhead guard. I attached it and everything is fine. I love this jointer, and I have already started putting it to good use. Now I just need to get some sort of dust collection system going....
