Grizzly 8″ jointers, good or bad
I am looking to buy an 8″ jointer. I had an older craftsman jointer and wore it out about a year ago. I haven’t had a jointer since. I have seen the Grizzly 8″ Jointer for sale under $700.00, does anyone own one of these? And is it a good tool for about half the price of a Delta or Powermatic. My Father-in-law owns several Grizzly tools and has never had any problems with them. I owned a Grizzly contractors saw that was a good tool, I only had problems with the Fence. I am not too concerned about brand names as much as quality, I want to know if I should get one of these at a bargain price or look elsewhere . Thanks, Steve.

Steve,
I've read of problems with Grizzly jointers but it's not my experience. We've had the 8" for around eight years. It's been used in a commercial situation and it's done well. We did replace the bearings once and I've been a little less than happy with the ability of the fence to hold it's setting largely due to heavy use and wear. Grizzly has changed the fence and I think that problem was solved.
From what I have seen they seem to be solid machines. I plan on using it in my one man cabinet shop. I was at one time set on buying an older Rockwell/Delta or Powermatic. Most of the ones you find are either 3 phase or they have alot of hours on them. I was fortunate enough to find an older Delta Unisaw in great condition but not so lucky finding a quality jointer.

Grizzly has improved the fences on both their tablesaws and their jointers, although on their tablesaws, I'd still go for a Shop Fox Classic or an aftermarket.

I've had the 8" Grizzly for about 9 years. Had to replace the starting capacitor last year but no other problems. I'm happy with the performance and think it is a good value for the price.

I'm happy with my 8 inch Grizzly, happy enough to buy a lot more grizzly tools since.
Thanks everyone for the input. I am sold. I think the bad experiences with the 8" jointer were relatively minor and any tool manufacturer could have similar or the same problems. It also seems to me they have made that jointer for a long time and probably have it figured out. Thanks again, Steve
