If I can, I would like to reopen the discussion on the new Grizzly ‘slot mortiser’, catalog #G0540. My quick take is that the x,y,z is worth the money alone _AND_ any concern about lateral loads can be overcome by prudent replacement of the bearings _or_ mounting a new head. Thoughts?

reepenstein,
I've been curious about this item as well.
I'd love to see a review of slot mortisers in general (what they are best used for and what their limitations are) as well as a review of the grizzly in general.
Still fighting the concept here and I guess the answer is to find someone close-by who has a slot mortiser, so I can see for myself.
I mortised some 1/2 slots 1" deep on my router table, in hard Maple and found it noisy, slow and painful, compared to my hollow chisel machine. I'm obviously missing something?

You are definitely missing out. Once you use a slot mortiser uou will be convinced. Never heard anyone one complain or go back to the chisel mortiser. I've used chain, chisel and the maka mortiser...that's a whole different animal. For the small or lare shop the slot mortiser is great. It's good for production or quick one off custom...easy change over and fast and accurate. Typically you feed the cutter in slowly side to side as you advance the depth of cut so the lateral force isn't that bad with this method.
I would have to second Rick3ddd opinion on slot mortisers. I made a router based slot mortiser and am completely happy with it. I am able to make just about any sized mortise I need in under 20 seconds. Perfect walls and no chatter. Couple the slot mortiser with loose tenon joinery and you have a very fast, strong and accurate way of joining frames together. Even if you still use traditional tenons the slot mortiser will prove its worth if you have any kind of volume to do.
