I am in the process of outfitting a shop and may finish the basics about the time I die. In consideration of my heirs, I would like to provide reasonable quality tools. Does anyone have any experience or advice on Grizzly’s 495X 8″ jointer?

are you sure the number is 495?
That's what's shown in the catalog.
It looks to be a good one:

I'm sure the 8" is a fine jointer it is the version with the parallelogram design and the siral cutterhead. It was not avail (if memory serves) when I got the 609 12". I've used the heck out of it and love it. It's only $300 more. It has the 4hss knives which I have not had an issue with. You can always switch out to the shelix head later if you desire. Good luck on the decision.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
I can not speak on grizzly's jointers, but I can say something on their G0555 bandsaw. I bought one about a year ago and I have had no problems from it. It worked right out of the box. The only issue I had was when I was assembling the stand, the directions could have been better. that is all. I feel like I made a great choice.
I just finished a discussion between a Grizzly 1023 and Steel City's new Ganite top saw. Its a tough decision between a 5hp saw and a 3 hp with a super high quality top. I have no reservations about the quality of Grizzly's product and there prices are reasonable, better than everyone in their class of machinery.
Have fun with it.
