I have read a lot about the Grizzly 8 inch joiners, Model GO586 and GO593. Does anyone have any experience with the GO490 ? This is the 8 inch with the Parallelogram beds.

I just purchased the Grizzly 8x75 jointer for my shop. I was going to wait and buy the spiral cutterhead model, but after reading FWW's article on 8 inch jointers, I went out and bought the straight blade model and got it new for around $575.00. It is a fantastic machine. It has very true infeed and outfeed tables. The knives came from the factory free of knicks and dings and it cuts very smooth with plenty of power. I highly recommend the Grizzly. Be warned, it is VERY heavy. My neighbor and I nearly busted a nut getting the top into my basement workshop!! You might want to check out the 2006 version which has the power buttons elevated closer to eye level which is a great feature. Good luck.

I bet that was unexpected. Busting a gut would be more typical. Heh.My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
Thanks for the feedback. This must be a very popular machine because they are back ordered.
Thanks for your feedback. I am leaning toward the Grissly but have to wait they seem to be back ordered.
I ordered one (GO586) 3 weeks ago, it arrived yesturday. They did say it was backordered for 4-6 weeks when I ordered it, so I was pleasently surprised. I set it up last night and ran a few boards. Very impressed.

Thanks for the feedback. Timing sounds right. I am ready to make a move. I will let you know how it works out.
Don't know about the newer ones, I picked up a G0500, the Taiwan-made model, before they discontinued it. I think it's an awesome machine for the money, and even if it had cost more it would still have been worth it. I was surfacing some 4" x 8" x 12' long pine posts for timber framing last week, and it worked very well. Flatten the 8" side, square the 4" edge, plane to thickness and two passes to rip to width. Didn't have to go to all that trouble, but I wanted to see how it would do on bigger pieces.
