I have a chance to pick up a 20″ x 8″ 3hp 2 speed Grizzly planer w/ xtra blades for $650 and a #G1018 8″ jointer w/ 65″ bed and xtra blades for $450. Both are in good condition and presently being used. Both have easy change blade systems. Do these sound like resonable prices? What can you tell me good or bad about these machines? Present owner has upgraded to larger equiptment so is selling.

"Present owner has upgraded to larger equiptment so is selling." Holy smokes!
"Both are in good condition and presently being used." An important consideration. These sound like excellent prices. Personally, if they passed inspection under use at the guy's shop, I'd go for it. Plenty of feedback here on the 8" jointers to indicate they're great machines. Haven't seen as much on the big planers, but run a piece of wood through and check it out. Obviously, if the guy's been using them up and they're not stuffed in a corner collecting junk, they've served him pretty well.

Trialnut,
I picked up a used Grizzly 20" planer last year for about the same price. It also included an extra set of blades. I changed the gear oil, belts, cleaned it up, and now it hums! I don't like the infeed and outfed rollers, they are kind of cheap, so I leave mine off. I don't think you will be disappointed if the machine has been taken care of. Thats half the price of a new one.

Thanks for the input, both of you. Am going to look at them tonight and if they really are in as good a shape as advertised then my back is going to hate me for more heavy lifting. Am taking tie downs and a tarp along also. Thought they sounded like a good deal but wanted another opinion.

Now the proud owner of both of them. Even talked him down some more on price. Both machines are in like new condition and came with mobile bases. Usually the way my luck runs if it were raining soup I'd be standing there with a fork. Today made up for some of that. Need to read those pennypinchers more often. The Professional Termite
Wow! Incredibly cool! Feel free to gloat some more after you've milled a bunch of wood -- looking forward to reports!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Was the seller buying more Grizzly stuff?

No, he bought a new Delta 20" planer and I didn't see any other jointer around. I believe they are just going to use the planer to flatten stuff. It looked like thier main line of work is builtins and fireplace surrounds. They also have a Delta DC 380 planer for sale for $750.
