I am considering buying a Grizzly 8×75 jointer, and their 20″ planer. Anyone want to chime in on these machines, or on grizzly. In the tools magazine last month Fine Home rated the Grizzly jointer best overall.

Have you done an "Advanced Search"?? There are many reports on the Grizzly jointers here. Not so many on the planer, methinks.

I bought one about 4 years ago. i had it shipped out and I did have to put it together [about 3 to 4 hrs]. I had to fine tune it and level up the tables. I don't use it a whole lot, but it does work fine with lots of power. If they sell them now in spiral heads, i would recommend it.
Trapper,
I bought a used 20" Grizzly planer a couple of years ago for $750.00. It needed some clean up and adjustment but runs just fine now, in fact hums is a better description. Parts were very easy to order from Grizzly. I'm not a production shop, but for the price I bought it for, it sure is nice to have that extra width and power. There is also less snipe from the 20" planer than from my 12 1/2" Delta portable. The finish isn't the best on the Grizzly, but if you can get past that, I think mine is a great tool.
Good luck,

Trapper,
I own both, They have been virtually flawless for nearly 50,000 bd.ft. of hardwood..
The only failure was after about 20,000 bd.ft. on the planner one of the three belts failed.. I got one at the nearest auto parts store and had it replaced inside of 5 minutes.. Nah, I didn't replace all three (too cheap).
Other than that they've worked well and given me a great deal of fine work..
I expected a real disaster because rather than be home when they delivered it, I choose to go to the nearby terminal and pick it up..When I saw it I realized disaster had hit. The crate was all smashed in and even a couple of castings were broken..
I called Grizzly and they told me not to accept the shipment.. They would send another.. I went back and looked at it and realized in my panic had overlooked how easy it would be to fix what was smashed. I called Grizzly back and asked and they said if I wanted to try to fix it they would overnight airfrieght me the parts. If I could fix it fine. If not, send it back.. They even offered to extend the warrantee. The next morning I rolled out of bed and they'd overnighted me everything.. no paperwork, no forms, nothing but that phone call.
15 minutes later I turned it on and made my first tenative cut.. It hummed.. just sweet!
Everything else has worked flawlessly for the four or 5 years I've owned it.. Nothing fancy, basic, simple, stuff.
I like Grizzly and have spoken well of them for the past 5 + years.
I think this guy might could use some suggestions from you.
