hey all, recently my 20 year old g1017 12″ planer has been acting out. while running, either with or without material running through it, the machine seems to slow down as if it is slightly and very briefly bogging down or under powered. i am wondering if it could be the brushes. i know these wear and i have never replaced them. the little planer has seen a great deal of use, hopefully, with your advice, it will see yet more. thank you. eef

Check the drive gears for wear or missing teeth if it has them. I had a Grizzly planer with that problem once.
bd,
been meaning to check under the hood for a bit now. i have had the machine quite disassembled a time or two. i will see.
thank you.

The brushes should be fairly easy to check -- have you pulled 'em??
good morning forestgirl,
is that where you would look given the symptoms i'm experiencing? and, you are correct, the brush caps are easy to get to.

I don't know for sure, but
I don't know for sure, but brushes are so dang easy to pull and check, seems it would be good to "just do it." I hate messin' with electrical stuff, but gladly pop those thingies out on anything that's acting weird. It's paid off a couple of times.
We need Don Green here to help you out. 'Twere it me, I'd check to see if the motor gets hot, plug it into a different circuit, eliminate any extension cord that might be involved, and of course do what dbuffin suggested.
hey,
yep, there's about 3/8"
hey,
yep, there's about 3/8" left on those brushes and although my sentiments about electrical work run similar to yours, i'd wager you've solved my problem.
thank you.

eef,
The v-belt could be slipping also. If it is 20 years old it has likely had enough :-)
Don
hey don,
are you referring to the drive belt? the belt on that little planer is grooved, the high spots correspond to grooves on the pulley. you may be perfectly correct and i do need to tune it up. i work for the los angeles school district and some years ago the tool sharpener offered to sharpen my stuff along with the classroom tools. they do good work. those grizz knives hold an edge. the symptoms are as if the power to the machine is intermittent, as if it's bogging down ie, full power, slow down, full power, slow down etc.
thanks,
eef
