Hey All,
Happy New Year. I am considering a Grizzly product, but I am wondering about the the quality of the Grizzly supplied “spiral” indexed cutterhead on their jointers & planers. The machine I am thinking about is their new combo jointer/planer, which will not be available with the “Byrd” head, of which I’m familiar. I would appreciate your opinions.
Thanks,
John

I have had one for a couple of years. I have no problem in recommending it. I have been very pleased with the performance. My only issue with it has been the switch placement but all the new ones have corrected that so some body must be listening to users.
Good luck, Bob
Dear Bob,
You have a combination jointer/ planer? I thought that they were new to Grizzly.http://www.grizzly.com/products/G0634This is not a straight jointer, but a jointer with a surface planer built into it ala "European"Best,John
I guess I should have done more research before I answered. I just have the jointer. If I ever change out my thickness planer I would buy the spiral heads. I really believe you get smoother cut and I hate setting knives.
If you get this machine I would be very interested in it's performance. I had no idea Grizzly was making combination machines.

I'd be willing to bet it's fine as I've used the Northtech planer which has a similar head. Why not ask for a sample and get a sample of the Byrd head to compare for yourself??? These heads have been around for years in the pro-shops. Most technical developments have been around for many years and it takes awhile for the small and hobby shop folks to learn about them. Woodworkers seem slow to adapt to new things as they wait for their buddy to buy one first.
Dear Rick,
I have a "Byrd" in my jointer and love it, I was curious out the "non Byrd" heads. Thanks for your idea. I may just do that.Best,John
I have a Grizzly G0543 8" jointer with a spiral cutter head. I have been using it for a few years and I would recommend it. I have yet to rotate a carbide insert and I have never seen any lines or tracks on any wood that I have used it on.

Dear Jerry,
Would you say the it is "finished" coming off your jointer, say for paint grade?Best,John
I have the same jointer as Jerry- and the same experience. Rugged, good fit and finish, very good surface results- paint grade or perhaps a bit better. I think I have had to rotate one insert in the past 14 months.Glaucon
