Lee Valley sell a Box-Slotting bit to cut grooves for drawer bottoms. You clamp the drawer front, back and sides together then route the groove, presumably on a table mounted router. The selling point is that all four slots are in alignment and there are no gaps in teh corners. The router bit shank is 1/4″ (1/2 ” not available) which I think is too thin when routing hardwood with 1/4″ grooves for the bottom.
Has anybody had experience with this bit and if so what are your comments.

Are you suppose to round the corners of the plywood bottom? If so, how can you be sure it will seat all the way into the grooves and not leave a little triangular hole in one or more of the corners?
I bought the bit for making 1/8" grooves, but haven't used it yet. I've used similar bits in the past and they make quick accuate work out of making the slot, but you do need to round off the corners of the drawer bottom so it fits.
The 1/4" shank should not be a problem, it helps you get a tighter radius in the corners.
Hi Willy, I have this bit and used it a lot in both hard and soft wood. The quarter inch shank won't be a problem as there is very little strain on the bit. It works well and you won't need much of a radius on the corners of the bottom panel to make it fit properly. It's a quick and accurate way to make the slot for the bottom. It comes with two bearings but I just use the one for 1/4 " groove.
Cheers Dale.
