This is my first post. I want to grow a small colony of staghorn sumac trees for use in turning bowls, pens, and other various projects (and sumac soda). Does anyone have any information on how to grow and/or dry staghorn sumac, or how long it takes to grow to a decent size? I know that it grows quite quickly and is an exotic wood, but that’s about all I know.

Thanks! Is there any information on how to successfully grow it?
It seems to just grow like a weed. But if you want useable wood, keep the lower trunk clear of suckers, or you'll end up with a shrub, rather than a tree.
I never have tried to plant sumac. I did collect the seeds from some trees to make the lemon-like tea. The extra seeds volunteered trees at the edge of the yard. Several came up without any effort on my part. The tree leaves look great in the fall. Bees love the flowers. I have never tried to use the wood, yet.
Thanks for all the info! I tried making some sumac lemonade this morning. It tasted okay (it had a hint of mint). For right now, I’ll try to find some already full sized sumac for use in woodworking. There’s one nearby that I’ve heard is almost a foot wide.
