I have a piece of furniture (a desk) that was purchased approximately 17 years ago. At the center of the desk where our arms rest the finish has dulled and turned gummy. The desk is not an extremely expensive piece and I don’t want to refinish it, since it has ball and claw feet with some other carving on it that would make it too labor intensive. Also the damaged area amounts to about 18″ by 3″.
I typically finish with shellac or wiping varnish and have little experience with lacquer, so this is totally new to me.
Does anyone have any suggestions on repair without refinishing.

I had a rocker that was only gooey where one's hands would rest. I was able to clean up the grime with Murphy's Oil Soap with no damage to the finish, or what was left of it on that well-worn chair. That remedy lasted pretty well until i had an intruder land on it on his way off my property...broke it all to pieces.
I appreciate the input tried the approaches and both worked. It appears to be an easy solution - much easier than I anticipated.
You can take some mineral spirits and a rough cloth like a piece of towel and clean that area. Keep your cloth just barely damp. Just did it to the surfaces of our church pews and have done it to my banisters and some chairs many times.
