I have purchased them, but have not yet built the chair, I do plan on it and have already acquired the lumber necessary to build the chair.
I know the price seems steep, but keep in mind that these are step by step instructions that include many, many photos, full size plans, a few hardwood templates, full step by step instructions on how to build all the needed jigs to build a beautiful Maloof style rocking chair that would be completely out of the range of most to build without Hal's instructions.
I know Hal has put a large effort into producing these instructions, and anyone that is serious about building this chair, which when complete, can be worth thousands of dollars, should feel confident the instruction package is worth it. Hal will also answer any questions you have along the way via email, and I have found him very responsive.
Just as a note, I don't think Sam Maloof is very happy about people copying his chairs, but not to many of us could afford a Maloof original anyway.
One more note, the instruction package is a stack of computer printed sheets, and I suggest you place the sheets in page savers and into a binder to protect your investment.
I have no connection to Hal Taylor.

Dear Bear:
thanks for your input. I think I have to take the leap and give this a shot. The chair is beautiful and I have to make it.

Yes I have. I found the plans a little confusing. I didn't think they flowed logically but it may just be a different way of doing things. I had questions and Hal anwsered them all. The chair is very nice but be aware it is a big project with jigs to build and a few things to buy that you may not have on hand. Bobby
I went to Hal's website and looks around, it looks like a future project. I did not see the plans for sale on his website.
How much does he get for a complete set of plans?
thanks, Chris.
You can find the plans for sale here. As you can see, he gets about $310 for a complete set of plans and templates. My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
This is a link to an Australian that has a CD with plans, instructions, jigs, and templates for an upholstered seat rocking chair in the Maloof style. It's an alternative you might want to consider. Even if you elect to make the rocker from Hal Taylor's plans, having the extra set will add to your knowledge base for little additional cost.

He hangs out on this site and if you search it you should be able to find discussions about his chairs and his mortising jig for the router.

And to clarify. I don't have any affiliation with him, nor have I made one of his chairs, and I'm not trying to disparage Hal Talor's plans. I think that covers the disclamer. ;-)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have purchased Hal Taylor's plans and have built his rocker. The plans are excellent and with thought and care to details, my rocker turned out better than expected. When you consider the effort, cost of wood, cost of other supplies the plans are a bargain if you follow them.
