This morning I was fortunate enough to go up to a local “Woodcraft” store that just opened recently and see a 2 hour demo by Master Cabinetmaker Frank Klausz. Mr. Klausz showed us how he prepared the wood (planing and scraping) and then demoed the dovetails cutting several examples. Determined to make my own attempt, I bought the appropriate gear (saw, chisels, chisel mallot, measuring gauge, etc.) as well as his DVD. Mr. Klausz was kind enough to show me how to use my new saw and sign the DVD case. (Very nice man, great presenter!!) All and all a very worthwhile trip for this wood newbie!! I now have to find some scrap wood and see if I can do it (or something that approaches it :-)) Mr. Klausz is teaching a fine finishing class at the store this afternoon (Leeseberg, VA) and a more indepth class tomorrow on the dovetails at another local store (Springfield, VA.) Since those require signing up and cost $$ I’m not attending but I wish I could!! If he comes to your area, and you are interested in hand tools or finishing at all take advantage of it!!

His videos are all chocked full of tips and info. I love them because they address the supporting hand tools and techniques for the subject matter as well as the main topic. I try to watch them every 6 or so months, and always pick up another nugget.
