handheld veneer stitchers, anyone?
Anyone use the handheld veneer stitcher? Is it worth the $700 or so? I have a large job coming up that will require a bit of veneering, but not sure if it is worth it. See stitcher here: http://www.vacupress.com/accessories.htm#stitcher

Wow. That is really overkill for anyone other than a commercial veneering operation. How big is your "large job?" I have been applying veneer tape to veneer for over 30 years and never thought I needed a device like this (never knew it existed).
Veneering and its preparation is really not that hard. But if I were making a living at veneering, day in, day out, a device like this would quickly pay for itself.

Didn't think I need one until I saw it on a ww show. Put 2 pieces of veneer together, run this thing down the seam, and the veneer is immediately ready for pressing...very cool. The job is a whole kitchen of veneered doors. I could apply tape, but if this stitcher is worth it, then I'll pull the trigger. I'd like to get some real user's experiences first if I can.
Yu might be better off economically to go and have yer veneer laid up commercially.Last time I sourced out a spec for vertical grain cherry, I ended up paying 200 a sheet vs 80 a sheet for off the shelf stuff. took me a while to find the mfgr though (Bacon Veneer steered me to the right fellas though)A kitchen ain't gonna require but three or four 4x8 sheets if that, methinks, done and laid up, maybe 800 bucks(or less), vs buying the stitcher laying up, glueing etc, gonna take yu 2-3 days. AND yu got the liability for defects. Sub it out, spread the potential blame, and get on with the more significant efforts. Just my thoughts
I just happened to notice a used one for sale over on Woodweb. It looks like an ebay offering starting at $75.

Can you please give me an URL? Tried looking on WoodWeb and eBay with no luck.
Sorry about that, should have included it the first time around:http://www.woodweb.com/exchanges/machinery/posts/412129.htmlThew
If you get a desktop veneer tape dispenser that holds 2 rolls of tape, the taping goes 3-4 times as fast. You can pull off long pieces perfectly wet and ready to put down. I glued up 20 sheets of ply, around 1,200 sq ft of veneer like this.

I understand that you are intrigued by the stitcher, but the veneer tape applicator shown here draws your sheets together and applies the paper tape. Maybe it will fit the bill. I am very cautious about buying a tool like the stitcher on ebay. Buy a new one if you must, but look at the link below and maybe go a little lower tech.

Are you looking to cut down on the removal of the paper tape after glue up? A cabinet scraper does short work of removal of the paper tape. You can also sharpen a painter's scraper and it will do a fine job of paper tape removal. JL
This is veneersystems stitcher.
