Hello,
I tried another post and for some reason the forum system would not accept it.
Anyway:
I have access to a lot of maple burls, and two questions about them:
What is the best way to harvest them? slice them off or cut through the trunk/branch and leave them intact?
What is the best way to store them?
Thanks

Not sure, but . . .
Since a real burl expert hasn't shown up yet, here goes.
I've never harvested burls, so take this with a proverbial grain of salt.
My understanding is that burls are a surface abnormality. If so, leaving a chunk of trunk attached wouldn't gain much. I would think that the cut surface of the burl should be waxed or painted so as to reduce the chance of splitting during the drying process. Similarly, I'm not sure if the guideline of one year per inch of thickness for air drying would also apply to a burl.
most burls
go straight thru to the heart. will taper in a v to the heart. if the tree is down , then take it all. if it is a healthy standing tree, there is only one way to leave it healthy
