Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on handpainting children’s furniture. I have an old pine bed that I thought I could spruce up a bit for my 2 year old – I would love to paint it white and then draw and paint some fairies etc onto it but I have no idea where to start – what paints/finish I need to apply. I’m also living in a Spanish speaking country (and don’t speak spanish!!) and therefore can’t ask anyone in the DIY shop for any advice.
Thankyou,

The one time I did it, I used milk paint for the ground, and acrylic artist paint for the figures. I already had some practice painting on canvas, so it wasn't much of a problem. I put a flat acyrlic clear coat over it.
Here's a picture of it:

Thanks - beautiful toy box and exactly the effect I want - you're dealing with an absolute amateur here - sorry!!! but what is milk paint and how does it differ from using your average emulsion?
Ok - have just read about milk paint - think I'll have a problem finding it out here though - I'm in Uruguay and anything other than the norm is quite difficult to get hold of - will normal matt finish paint work just as well with the acrylics?

Yes, I would recommend flat acrylic paint, although almost anything will work if it's thoroughly dry. I don't know what's sold in Uruguay, but I'd avoid anything that uses linseed oil for a base since that can take quite while to dry. The rule for artist's paints is oil over acrylic, but not vice versa. Artist's oil paints can take years to dry if applied thickly. Be aware that acrylics dry very fast, so you don't have much time to correct mistakes.
