I am having an issue in finding the correct fastener to hang a cross I designed and built for a church sanctuary. The cross is about 10 feet tall with a cross member about 5 feet wide and made of red oak. the cross is hollow with the front left open for a stained glass panal. It is back lighted with LED’s to project through the stained glass but also onto the wall behind it. The cross needs to be mounted approx. 2″ off the wall to get the desired effect.
My problem is I am fastening the cross to a 10″concrete wall made with ARXX blocks. The structural component of the design allows for supports at the four ends of the cross members in a pocket with a hole drilled approx. 6″ from the end. I planned on having a bolt 1/2″ to 3/4″ in diameter stick out 3″ from the sheetrock face and just slip the cross over the heads of those bolts that would stop the cross from falling off but also make it an easier repair if the LED’s happen to fail sometime in the future.
I hoped to find a bolt long enough and surdy enough so that it could support the weight reliably knowing that the anchor would have no support for the 3″ it is exposed outside the wall but also for the next 3″ of sheetrock and styrofoam before it is anchored in the concrete. I was hoping to find a tapcon or something similar because of the hardness of the steel but the longest i can find is 6 1/4″. I would need one at least 10″ and to be safe 12″. Most heavy duty concrete fasteners I have experience in are with applications in floors and not in side walls. Does anyone have any practical experience in a case like this or any ideas on what I might be able to do. I look forward to your comments as I am really not sure where to go with this.
The cross will be approx. 100 lbs. after the installation of the stained glass which is being created now or in the near future. I am waiting for a call to pick it up.
Thanks for listening !!

Maybe-
Threaded rod into a drop in anchor. Get in contact with Hilti and see if they think it plausible.
That way you could nut the cross end, slip that on a metal keyhole firmly fastened to the cross.
Hard part will be drilling the hole level and straight enough to hit the targets later.
maybe............
Otherwise, think about epoxy to anchor the threaded rod into the concrete. Block/brace to keep in place till the epoxy sets.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a drop in anchor. Do you mean something like a leaded sleeve? Would a large wedge anchor work? I found some that are 3/4" by 12" long, I'm just not sure about the side wall application though. Do they tighten down securely? I've been thinking I might make a cone out of wood that would act as a washer to tighten against the wall. It's the forces in withdrawal that are still a concern even though the cross is not relatively heavy.
