Harbor Freight Dust Collection Upgrade
After months of researching, I decided to build my own dust collection system. This system is entirely bagless, and has been extremely efficient so far. I needed a system that had little footprint and high dust collection capacity.
The motor is a Harbor Freight motor that I purchased new, and then sold the remaining bits on Craigslist to help recoup some of the money. It attaches to a Super Dust Deputy, which is connected to a 20 gallon drum. I opted for a 20 gallon drum as it feels very space efficient, and I know it won’t be overly difficult to move when it’s full. On the exhaust side is a Wynn Environmental 13R230NANO that is connected to a bucket.
The whole thing is on wheels, and has the same footprint as a Harbor Freight Dust Collection system (22” x 33”.)
After posting this over on my Instagram (@modernandmint), several folks asked for plans. After some encouragement, I made plans and they are available on my Etsy for $10. The link is here:
The plans include a full purchase list, instructions on breaking down the lumber, and step by step instructions on how to make the whole thing work. I will say it looks really straightforward, but there are definitely more pieces than anticipated.
I originally posted this on Lumberjocks, but wanted to post on other forums in case someone is looking for a small shop dust collector build, but is not on Lumberjocks.

I certainly dig this. What's a good estimate on the all-in cost? Once you get the collector, cyclone, and the filter?
Hi Ben,
If you were to purchase everything brand new, I think the build would run approximately $800. However, there are a lot of opportunities to save money, and my build came in closer to $650. I do think it's possible to build this for even less than that. The most expensive items are the Super Dust Deputy, the motor, and the Wynn Environmental Filter.
The areas where I think the most money could be saved are:
The 2hp motor - I bought mine new from Harbor Freight, and sold off the extra bits on Craigslist. However, I see 2hp motors/dust collectors come up on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace pretty frequently for about $50 in my area.
The Wynn Environmental Filter - Depending on how close to you live to Wynn Environmental, you'll likely save money on shipping. Shipping a filter from them to Portland, OR was expensive for me. I do think this filter is going to last ages though, because it has over 200 square feet of filter and when paired with the Super Dust Deputy, barely anything goes through it anyway.
The 20 Gallon Drum - I've got tips on finding these in your area in the plans, but if you can find one locally, you'll likely save money.
The "all brand-new" price I quoted includes miscellaneous hardware and lumber. If you're like me, then you've probably already got some (if not all) laying around.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Victor
