Looking for thoughts on whether its a good idea to use hardwood as a floor in a wood workshop. I have a couple of machines that weigh in excess of 500 pounds (they will primarily be stationary although they are mounted on casters). I emailed Lumber Liquidators about the best wood for such a shop and they replied (to my surprise) that they thought the weight would be excessive.
I had thought that an oak floor over a plywood subfloor would be adequate.
Any thoughts out there?
Thanks

wood vs. WOOD
My guess is that Lumber Liquidators was speaking of the thin laminate strip flooring they sell - flooring that essentially floats on the subfloor. Old-style hardwood flooring was solid wood that was around 1/2" thick, and even older wood flooring was real planks, 4/4, or so. Both were nailed into the subfloor. Nowadays, however, that would get awfully expensive.
For a less-expensive alternative, you might consider tongue-n-groove OSB (oriented strand board), properly sealed with an epoxy-based floor paint. Consideration whould be given, of course, to what is below the OSB - joists or concrete slab, with the corresponding vapor-barrier treatment.
Weight
I guess the plywood is on a cement slab - weight is no problem. Out of high school I worked many years in a large factory building with a cabinet shop on the third floor. The flooring was oak - painted gray; but as I remember it was comfortable + indestructible. Large machines with guys beating on the place every day - not me of course.

yes this seems to be a good combination. plywood with diffrent mica coating is a very good option becuase in mica coating , there is no problem of water spoiling our wood work.cabinate should also be made by better plastic coated mica.
