Hi All,
I finally got my new woodshop set up for the most part, but I am faced with a problem as to where I can get good quality hard woods in the western-central Florida area. I’m in the Hudson- Port Richey area and have not been able to locate any sources for good hardwoods. Lowes and Home Depot do not have the selection or qualty I need. Any recommendations? ————— Joe

Welcome..I moved here a couple of years ago and faced the same problem. It remains somewhat of a challenge today and even though I've found some reasonable suppliers for the every day stuff, I still get speciality woods from out of state.
That said here are places you might what to check out:
Quality Ply in Pinellas Park - they sell ply (duh) but also have a pretty wide range of domestic and a little bit of exotics. They have excellent customer service. You will need to have an "account" with them, but its no big deal. Jeff is the guy I deal with.
Intercity Lumber in Tampa - similar to Quality Ply, but I don't like the way they store their lumber and they don't have as much of a selection.
Hardwood Lumber of Lakeland - really really nice folks. Have a nice selection - primarily domestics, but a few interesting species too. Well stored. Reasonable prices. Jim Hamer is the owner.
Cocobolo Inc - in St. Pete. Exotics only. Pretty much all S. American. Nice stuff. Small boutique supplier.
There is also Alva Hardwood..alva lumber...a little further up north, I've not been there and mean to go some day. Also there are any number of supplier down in Miami and I"ve done road trips down there and gotten some great deals on exotics.
Hope this all helps.
Alison
Allison,
Care to share your Miami suppliers (and tell us of the deals)? I do see some great stuff (not many places in the US have Cuban Mahogany growing on every block as street trees), but one can't have too many sources!
Thanks,
Clay
Hey stranger...thought you were West Coast bound?
Your secret sources are probably way better than mine. Check out StickTrade.com for these guys. http://www.sticktrade.com/members/766.htm

Is all well?
Hi gal,
I head west around 6/15 ... and, thanks!

I've only been to Shell Lumber @ 27th? Ave near US 1, but it's a feast lotsa 8/4 stuff 8" wide, as well as plywoods, e.g. teak/holly.
Hi Joe, Alison gave you some good ones. I'm very familiar with Alva Hardwoods, just outside of Ft. Myers. Merrill Morrison is the owner, and great to work with. Great selection. He's usually closed for a couple of months during the summer, though.
Hey Creekwood...
Ready for the next huricane season?
What sort of stuff does Alva have?
Alison
If you guys come over to the Orlando area, there are a couple of sources, especially if you have a tax number and can buy wholesale.
Hi, Alison, I guess I'm 'bout as ready as ever. We went 44 years between the last two bad ones, so I'm hoping that will hold up for at least a few years.
Alva has many domestics, some real good curly maple, and a lot of exotics. Don't have the phone number handy, but I can get it if you want it. Merrill is a real good guy, very helpful. I think he can put his hands on just about anything you want, or will direct you to a better source.
