I've heard decent things about Willard Bros Sawmill in Trenton [(609) 890-1990], but I've not tried them myself. Apparently good selection and price and they don't bug you about pulling pieces to compare and select.

Never underate the Groff boys, Billy and His son Chris. Rt 272, 18 miles south of Lancaster, Pa. You can get there from anywhere. the best
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

When I was in Jersey I used Williard Brothers regularly. Good selection and some unique items such as spalted woods...have not been there in eight years however....
Hearne Hardwoods is a short trip over to PA. Outstanding selection of hardwoods and highly figured woods, thick slabs, turning blocks, etc.

That's a great place, but is actually closer to Lancaster and Maryland than it is to So. Jersey. If you are looking for non-exotics, you probably needn't travel so far...Glaucon

It's not a long drive -- over the bridge through Delaware and then up through the hills of SE PA. Go through parts of three states in less time than it would take to go from San Jose to Oakland (or, for FG, less time than going from Bellevue to Bainbridge, including waiting for the ferry...). States are pretty small around here.
Besides, I'm in Central Jersey and I make the trip occasionally. South Jersey should be a breeze.Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005
I live in SE PA and work in Princeton. My guess is if you were to travel from Trenton to Oxford, PA (which is a fair bit longer than my commute each day), your talking 1.5 to 2 hours (Oxford is in western Chester County, well past Kennett Square). 3-4 hours round trip seems like a long way unless you are buying in bulk or looking for an exotic wood.Glaucon

Yes, your numbers are about right. I live in Eastern Monmouth County (by the shore), and it took about 2 hours to get to to Hearne, but 1 hour of that is getting to Southern Jersey (say , Cherry Hill area). So starting from South Jersey, it shouldn't be too bad, even if it isn't exactly local. My regular lumber trips are all 45-75 minutes round trip, so I only make the trip to Hearne when I need some special woods. They have the exotics, and the heavily figured wood, but they also have stuff like 8/4 rift sawn cherry (excellent for cabinet legs), and other unusual cuts and thicknesses that are nice to have and hard to find.
But yes, for me Hearne is a special trip. If I lived an hour south in south Jersey, I'd go more often. It's worth the extra miles!Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005
Hey Pondfish,
Not that I can help, but I used to live in that part of Jersey also. I grew up in Little Silver. In what town in Monmouth County are you?

thank you to all who responded to my question
I've been buying lately from Willard Bros as mentioned previously, good selection and nice people. Easy access off of Rt295 near Trenton.
You might also try Mr. Roberts Lumber, just off the Route 30 in Barrington, they have a more limited selection of hardwoods.
I visited Willard Bros yesterday- the selection was smaller than I would have hoped. No tiger or birdseye maple, but a good selection of walnut, cherry, oak and box elder, of all things.
Selection and quantities ~Woodcraft, prices a little cheaper.
Delaware County Supply outside of Chester has a significantly larger selection (and pallets of stock), prices perhaps slightly higher. Very nice folks.Glaucon

I just moved to Freehold this spring and have been going to US Mahogany for some stuff - prices are a little high but they have a good selection of exotics and, of course, mahogany. They are located in Aberdeen.
There is also a place in SIcklerville, NJ - exoticwoods.com that sells exotics for musical instruments.
