Has anyone installed a Shelix on a DJ-20
I was ready to bite the bullet on getting a Shelix head head for my Delta DJ-20, so I sent an email to Byrd to inquire about the installation. I was under the impression that if I got the setup with the bearings already installed that installation was simply a matter of removing the bearing blocks, removing the old head, installing the new and away you go. The reply from Byrd seemed to indicate that one of the bearings needs to be field installed. Does that require pressing the bearing on? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Q,
From what I've seen, that bearing will need to be pressed on, and it will need to be in a pretty precise position so the cutterhead will go back on to the machine correctly.

I'm certainly no machinery expert, but if his rear bearing housing is cast into the machine base, than the bearing will definately need to be pressed in by him, or a qualified technician. Some are like this, and some aren't. I'm not familiar with the Delta. I'd suggest to the OP to direct his question to RickL or John White. Both of those fine gentlemen work on these machines all the time.

Hi Jeff,
Yes, I agree.

While I haven't installed a Shelix I have replaced the bearings on enough jointers including DJ20's and DJ30's. It's not that difficult.
The bearings are not a terribly tight fit. The outboard bearing can be tapped on with a block of hardwood with a hole or a piece of brass pipe. The only thing to make sure of is not to ding the cutters. You could wrap a rag around it and wear gloves. Installing it should only take a leisurely 10 minutes at the most.
