When having problems with a polyurethane paint that didn’t flow out a neighbour advised me to heat the paint to about 40/100 degrees C/F. It worked perfectly. My questions are:
Are there any serious drawbacks?
Why else is this never mentioned in books/articles on finishing?

A warmed coating does flow out nicely on a surface that is relatively close in temperature. I think a warm coating over a cold surface would start to wrinkle as it dried.
I don't know why it's not addressed in books.
