Well, thanks for all of your suggestions, but after a discussion with my grandfather in law, and my father in law, we were able to get the current heater working. I thought it had been too long since it was used, and it looked a little rusty in spots, and i had absolutely no idea how to get it working.
But my dad in law knew and in about 10 minutes it was pumping out the heat. it gets the shop comfy enough to work in a short sleaved shirt in abut 10 minutes. It’s a big box from the 50’s it looks like. From an old church basement. It’s natural gas with a big fan.

Make sure that you have good ventelation in your shop, that heater will use lots of oxygen .
I second PTU's comment on the air supply. Also, if was old and rusty looking it may be leaking all sorts of combustion gasses into the shop. Go get a carbonmonoxide detector, and hook it up. Also, I would be hesitant to leave it running unattended.
Better safe than sorry.
