Hi, John. My old blue Jet contractor saw has developed a problem. It seems the height lock isn’t very reliable. I’ve been doing 1/4″ tongue and groove, and getting the dado blade to stick at a given height is not happening. Could you tell me what’s involve in getting this mechanism to lock solidly??

Hi FG,
Can you give me a model number on the saw? With luck I can find a parts sheet for the saw and maybe I can figure out how the height lock worked. On most contractor's saws the height locks were fairly lame even when they were new. Does your asw height lock work by turning a smaller knob in the center of the height crank handle?

It's the JTS-10JF (or just plain 10F, maybe). I have an owner's manual Jet sent me after I got the saw from a frame shop guy who'd kinda trashed it. Below are scans of the relevant drawings (I hope).
It works thusly: The small knob in the middle of the front big wheel is supposed to lock the height adjustment, so I loosen that, adjust the height using the big wheel, then lock the small knob. I've tried various "techniques" (adjusting up only, for instance) but nothing seems reliable. This is especially true when the blade is at the lowest part of it's range -- today, I was cutting 1/4" deep grooves, and corresponding tongues that involved slightly less than 1/2" height setting.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Oops, forgot....

The parts sheets aren't giving me much to go on. I'll do some searching around and get back to you after the weekend.
