Helical cutter head for 16 inch 3 Hp planer
I have a ten year old Jet 16 inch 3 Hp planer that does a decent job for an old style straight cutter head planner. It does produce some tear out from time to time which can be worked out with hand planes and or sand paper. I keep the blades sharp by rotating two sets. Setting the blades is not very hard with a provided setting jig. My question is about installing an Helical cutter head. They cost $1,100 for my machine. 1) will a 3 Hp motor have enough power to drive a helical cutter head which I understand takes more effort; 2) is the difference worth the money and the effort to change out the head; 3) should I just buy another $3,000 planner with an helical cutter head?

I have a Grizzly 15 inch planer, and converted to a helical cutterhead a year ago. I have no regrets. The surface is glass smooth. The machine actually runs quieter as well.
