Hi all
I have a Victorian pine chest of drawers that I have stripped. I have just got round to strip the handles which are not pine. My problem is a few of them have got some sort of black film on them, under the layers of paint which will not shift with stripper, Any suggestions what it could be and what would remove it. I am just using regular paint stripper.
Thanks in advance

Are the handles wood? Have you tried lacquer thinner? Have you tried sandpaper? How old is the chest? I.e. is it really Victorian or is it newer than that and just looks Victorian? Where you live, is regular paint stripper methylene chloride or something else? What finish are you planning to replace the paint with? What's wrong with black handles?
Hi Uncle Dunc
Yes it is definitely Victorian, the handles are not black it is just a black residue left on after the stripper. And yes they are wood not pine though, not sure whats in the stripper its just a regular paint stripper. Have tried sandpaper that wont budge it , not tried laquer thinner as yet. I will probaly seal with shellac then wax.
When I stripped the chest I left the (handles, knobs)as they were a pain to strip so I bought some pine ones for it. I have read up a little about the chest in a pricing guide and it says it should have a different species of wood for the (knobs handles) so now I want to strip and use the original ones.
Thanks for your help will have to try the laquer thinner.
