Hey Folks,
I’d like to compile a FAQ to help new members of Knots (as well as existing ones) get quick answers to some of the most common questions about using this forum platform, such as uploading pictures or bookmarking favorite posts.
Because you all have the best experience with what works and what tricks can improve the user experience here on Knots, I’d like the tips to come from the community.
If you would be so gracious, please post as many ideas as you can to this thread. As it builds, I am going to create a page that users can easily click to for help.
Thanks in advance.

Question, Matt
Isn't this what the Search function is for?
Search is a great tool for finding information within the forum. But what I'm looking to do is compile a list of tips for using features in Knots. For example, when you perform a search in Knots, do you have any special tips to help improve your results?
I find the search function to present a great amount of info, but not always on the specific topic I'm looking for. So I just punch up one or two keywords and see what happens.
I think compiling a list of tips for using Knots is already self-explanatory and easily navigable. Just my opinion, though. Maybe your query will yield tips a little quicker.
Matt, I've often thought about making a page such as you describe. But it was time-prohibitive. In my thouights, the most important feature is to have screen shots to help illustrate a given process. For instance, a statement "Go to Advanced View" would be accompanied by a screen shot with an arrow pointing out where the Advanced View link is. Screen shots for attachments, especially illustrating what you're waiting to see as an indication that your attachment has, indeed, been uploaded. Screen shot of the drop-down list for Show Discussions.... You get the idea.

Use PIXresizer to convert you photos to JPEG and size them to about 50-80K. It is easy to use and its free at:

Matt,
I wonder if the FWW site could start and support a WIKIpedia?
The Knots forum is very informstive but there is:
* tons of information that is not very differentiated
* lots of repeated topics in different threads, over time.
* No mechanism for agreeing what is truth/good or mere prejudice, uninformed guessing or irrelevance.
As you know, a WIKIpedia has mechanisms whereby topics are organised hierarchically, with all participants allowed to contribute but also a semi-automated peer review for accepting/rejecting/editing what is offered up on this or that topic.
There usually needs to be a moderator of some kind; but plenty of organisations produce fantastically succesful WIKIs. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has a huge and dynamic one on their internet site that is an example to all.
Lataxe
Lataxe. I have been contemplating the idea of creating a mechanism for Knots members to maintain a "Woodworking Basics" glossary that provides definitions for all things woodworking.
We don't have a Wiki application but I'd be willing to act as the host for something like this (doing all the manual editing and compiling of content) if the community was willing to contribute.
It's probably something that would take a few months and brains to develop.

Wiki
A few of us who haunt the hand tools area have been thinking about this very subject over the past week or so. Cameron at Handplane Central is considering acting as the centre of gravity for a 'wiki' sort of thing focussing on plane-making.
It's the next step. FWW should be working in this area, IMHO.

If you use Norton antivirus (and probably other prophylactics), you'll have to find a way to disable at least some of it if you want to post pictures on Knots. I don't want to, so I can't!
Malcolm
Malcolm, I used NAV for years, and have posted dozens of pics at Knots. Something is amiss or not set correctly. Are you having problems with the pop-up window not appearing? I don't think thats the anti-virus, but some other part of a Norton program, but you can set it to accept pop-ups from any given site. Or are you using their firewall? Sysop might be able to help you configure it so it works. You aren't giving up any protection by setting it to allow pop-ups from Taunton.com. If the firewall is the problem, I can't help you there. I abandoned Norton's firewall in favor of less bulky options.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
