I am about to prep for finishing of a Lacewood door bell chime box. Any suggestion of sanding? It seems ke this stuff would benefit from a french polish in order to fill the wood, something I would rather avoid.
To what grit should I sand down to? I wuldlike to just apply an oil finish and then a garnet shellac.

I have used a lot of lace in Guitar work, ele. Bass fronts. Sand to 220 is all ya need..If ya want another step raise the grain after 180, then finish with 220. But non water based fin. does not really care if you raise or not. I do it to "check" if I have a sanding flaw..see it right away when it gets wet. Blow of the pc. or vacuum well to open the pores..looks muddy at times if ya don't.
Pino - if what you have is Australian Lacewood (Cardwellia spp), it finishes ok with most finishes. It finishes quite nicely with oil and wax as in the attached pic of tool-box drawers. For these I hand sanded to 220 grit - you don't seem to get any benefit going finer. After 2 or 3 coats of oil have dried well, wax with 0000 steel wool. The surface feels silky smooth, but still has a textured look.
