Hi all,
Here’s the situation. I decided to build a bar in my basement before the Superbowl(5 days away). The whole bar is built and yesterday I applied the oil-stain to the bar top. I was planning on doing an 1/8 epoxy pour to the top but was reading the epoxy instructions and it said it will not adhere to oil based stains. Any recommendations? The brand of epoxy is fgci super clear and the stain varathane premium fast dry.
Or am I out of luck with the epoxy?
Thanks!

You could try overcoating the stain with poly or anothe finish if the epoxy will bond to that. Test it first.
Using the epoxy would be at best experimental so I would switch topcoat to something proven, in this case a polyurethane varnish, catalysed such as Interlux perfection. With enough coats it will be thick ne glossy but for this coming superbowl,week-end one coat should suffice. https://www.interlux.com/en/us/boat-paint/varnish/perfection-plus
What gulfstar said.
You might get away with a couple/few coats of Zinsser Sealcoat, and then pour the epoxy. But its a risk. You could end up being mocked mercilessly during the superbowl.
Id stick with the oil based poly. And let it cure at least 49hours before the game.
I appreciate all the help!! It sounds like polyurethane will be the way to go. One question, I have a half dozen knot deep knots I was planning on the epoxy filling will polyurethane fill those knots the same way?
Man, I wish I asked this question on 12/15/22, when I was in the same position. I was stupid enough to believe the manufacturer who said you could apply MinWax stain, wait 7 days, then do the epoxy. You can do that, but after the epoxy dries you have to sand it all off then apply a polyurethane.
In your current position, I'd both apply one coat of polyurethane to the table top, then one coat to a test piece with a knot, try some quick set epoxy on the knot, and see if the epoxy holds. You'll still have enough time to get another coat or two on the top with or without epoxy filling the knots.
I am in the same boat as you have described. Did you have any luck applying an oil based poly over the stain before using the fgic superclear epoxy?
Yeah it worked out great, after the stain dried and a few wipe downs, I applied the epoxy and it worked great. Going on two years no issues.
Did you end up applying polyurethane or did you just wipe the stained wood and applied epoxy. I am in the same boat. I have used oil base stain and want to do thin epoxy layer on top. Wondering if I need to go with polyurethane top coat before pouring epoxy.
I haven't followed finishing tech since VHS tapes went away (+25 years?) but I seem to remember that shellac could adhere to anything, both as a topcoat and an undercoat. Is that no longer the case?
