All you experienced woodworkers are probably going to shake your heads but… I applied Minwax mahogany stain to a curio cabinet I made. The directions said to brush on, then wait 5-15 minutes to wipe off. After 10 minutes the stain was very dark and beginning to dry and I rubbed lightly to get the excess off and avoid leaving streaks from wiping. It looked pretty good but even after drying overnight the surface retained a glossy appearance. Did I put it on too thick and not rub it off right? Are you supposed to rub hard and get everything that doesn’t penetrate the surface off? And just add repetitive coats to darken it? Or do I just have to wait longer for it to dry completely? What’s the answer and what should I do now? I don’t think it should finish with a gloss. It should be flat, right? Where do I go from here? Need all the help I can get. I’ve put it a lot of work building this chippendale cabinet and I want to finish it right.

With Minwax, you should apply, let sit and then wipe as dry as you can. Let it then dry overnight and put on another applicacation if you want a somewhat darker appearence. Minwax contains some resins and seals the wood after the first application therefore additional applications add little or no color. It may just even it out somewhat. Before applying an overcoat, be sure to let it dry 4-5 days.
