Fire? (sorry)
Rotten.
Seriously, it's deteriorated so much it could be a lot of things.
Does it have a smell?
CD Douglas fir plywood with a major flaw I would guess. Like from wood salvaged from maybe Oregon or California burning down.
The US Forestry Service offers a wood ID service. You print out the form, cut a sample and mail both to them. They will reply by email. Plan on 10 weeks or more for a response. Cost is zero, and you can send 3 different samples in at one time. I seem to remember they limit the number of samples you can send per year, possibly 3. Another limitation is that they won't get too detailed in their identification, meaning they won't distinguish between Claro Walnut and Black Walnut, they'll just say "walnut". Good service, I've used them twice.

Got to look at the wood database.

Bark and end grain are the main identifiers. Smell is generally the biggest giveaway if the smell of a fresh cut is notable. You can really narrow it down with the wood filter on that site, though.
