Hello,
I was hoping the collective knowledge of this group would help me identify and date a plane that I inherited. I received 5 in total (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) but this one is the only one that I’m not sure about. The 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all Stanleys. My intent is not to sell any of them but to learn to use them. My Grandfather was a patternmaker and I inherited his entire collection of tools. I’ve been identifying and investigating all of them and these are the last on the list.
Disclaimer: I am NO expert in any of this and was relying entirely online ID charts. I included one of the ID charts I was using for reference. I think I’ve gone as far as I can on my o
I took lots of pictures but this site only allows 5 so hopefully they will be enough for a start. What I cannot upload a picture of I will try to describe as best I can.
Bed: No 7 on the toe, no raised ring under the knob, no patent dates, no casting marks that I can see, no lip on toe or heel, corrugated bottom.
Frog: I have attached a decent picture of the top and bottom as this is where I got lost in my ID chart. The lateral adjustment has no markings of any kind that I can see on either the top or the bottom i.e no “STANLEY” text or patent numbers.
Depth adjustment nut: 1″ diameter brass with knurling across 3 rings. The knurling is not diagonal. There are no other markings that I can see. Left-hand threaded.
Blade: The blade was super worn down so this plane appears to have been heavily used. It’s entirely possible this is a replacement. No Stanley markings of any kind. Instead it had the word “HICKORY” in tall thin letters with some sort of diamond across the front of the letters. The text is barely visible but I can tell there is some kind of writing inside the diamond shape.
Lever cap: I included picture of the lever cap. The back is recessed with no ribbing.
So is this a Stanley Bailey, Mishmash of parts from different planes, or something else altogether?
Thank you for looking and please let me know if aI forgot to include any important information. I may be able to post more pictures in responses. (This is my first post ever)
Thanks in advance for your expertise!

If you want a definitive resource for Stanley plane identification I would suggest Patrick Leach's Blood and Gore at supertool.com
Here's the link: http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.html
Good luck and enjoy your new tools
I'm not an expert but I do own a number of vintage Stanley planes including the No. 7. Mine has three patent behind the frog, the last one being APR-02-10. Your general description seems to match mine, although mine does say Stanley on the toe with the No. 7 on the rear. My front knob has no raised base, my tote matches yours with the raised base and forward screw. My brass adjustment knob is exactly as you described. Also, the frog basically matches mine as does the lateral adjustment lever with the "mortised" tab. Many less expensives planes had a bent metal tab 0n the lateral adjustment lever.
Sorry, I've got nothing more definitive for you. The various Stanley models evolved over the years but yours may very well be a Stanley.
Thanks for the link. That actually helped a lot.
I was able to identify it as a Stanley type 8.
They type of frog meant it had to be 5-8. the corrugation didn't start until 1898 so that eliminated 5-6. The lateral adjustment lever limited it to an 8.
Thanks again!
