I need help identifying the species of wood depicted in the attached photo. At first, I thought it was Southern Yellow Pine, but now I am wondering whether it might be a species of cedar. Any ideas? It has seen some weathering.

Looks like Douglas Fir to me. Does it smell good when you cut it?
Doesn’t have much of a perceivable smell when I cut it. I had hoped it would be Douglas fir, as it would be easier to match with stock at big box store, but grain and coloration seemed more varied to me than Douglas.
Doesn't look like SYP. But it's hard to tell from 1 photo.
Grain's all wrong for a fir.
It's very hard to tell for sure.
It helps to know where the wood is from as that narrows it down a bit. In NZ, that could be a piece of Kauri, Matai or Rimu. Certainly looks to be a softwood. perhaps redwood?
Southern California from a deck built maybe 20 years ago or so
Deck, Socal, good chance it's redwood.
Maybe weight it and match it up with a species in the Wood Database ..
There's a service offered by the Forestry Products Lab. Send in a sample and you'll get a reply and an ID. Plan on waiting a few months - this is not Amazon Prime. Here's the link:
