Hello all, New to this site and fairly new to fine woodworking in general. After doing high rise construction in manhattan for the better part of ten years (drywall, framing, doors, ceilings, and so on), I have decided to devote more time to working on custom cabinets, furniture, etc. Due mainly to a lack of working space I have not been able to pursue this favorite hobby/passion of mine. Anyway, to make a long story even longer I was wondering if there were any posters from the new york city/ long island area that would be so kind as to kind of pointing me in the right direction, as far as locations for purchasing materials, tools, and all around woodworker freindly lumberyards or mills. Willing to travel upstate if neccesary. Thanks in advance…Mike P.S. If I turn out to be any good could this be as profitable as it is fullfiling? Just wondering.

mike here are a couple of links to try, http://www.liwoodworker.org and http://www.liwoodturners.com. they hold ameeting i believe the third thursday every month , there a ,understanding bunch of guys who have a pretty vast library of books, articles, videos. and a boatload of knowledge. who are enthuiastic, and some are excellent craftsman. i went there once in awhile last year, but stop because of a back surgery that took president. i believe it's held at a place called the brush barn in smithtown, it does have a membership fee thats not that out of line.i use a small lumber yard around by me called Burts Lumber they have two locations. but i'd advise a local to where youre located. for exotic plywoods i've used Long Island Laminates they have a great line of product. as far as mills there are two places one is called suburban mills in huntington and harned mills in commack harned has been around i think like 200 years. suburban new but has good inventory. as far as tools i use three places one is the ubiquitous woodworkers warehouse, dynamite tools in bohemia, those guy are like dealing with car salesman , but they have alotta stuff i walk around there for hours. and H.I.T. tools on the south shore of long island sell the heavy stuff tablesaws bought my powermatic from them 12 years ago and a delta drillpress. they fix it for you to......... well good luck and most important have fun........ bear

For tools you can try amoazon. com they have all the major lines delta powermatic. If you are like me you want some one that lives next door to sell you the tools but it is still a place to see and get an idea if some one is ripping you off.
