Well I went to my guy I get my stuff from and now I’m a lot poorer than I was yesterday. I am building a hutch for the wife out of cherry and I want it to be nice. I want the top part to be special, so I asked him to find me enough to get either wide enough for a single board side (10 3/4″) or a nice bookmatch. I had been to his place a couple of times and just could not find the right stuff. He kept telling me he would find it. He only deals is QS and highly figured stuff. Well he calls me last week and said he found what I was looking for and it was going in the kiln. He called me yesterday and said I could come look. I went and helped him unload. Oh man was that stuff nice. This log was a salvage log. He had sawed the log in a way that you could put the boards in series for almost an entire flitch. Well I kept looking at the bookmatch pairs and oohing and ahhing and before I knew it, I had taken almost the whole thing. It’s stickered in the background of this picture. At $6.00 a BF for bookmatch 6/4″ that he sold as 5/4″ I felt like I had a good day, but $283 bucks lighter. Honest I went there hopeful to get just a couple boards to complete my project. As we kept unloading the kiln and I would stand those planks up side by side and I had enough to do the job, they kept calling me “TAKE ME HOME WITH YOU”. Well I kept taking and taking. Anyway I’ve got my fix for now, but he showed me some curly cherry that’s getting ready to cook. Oh boy here we go again!

Congrats, Bones! Those boards can fill your dreams for some time, 'til the right project comes along. Cool! Do you know yet which 2 or 3 will go to the hutch?
Nope, not yet. I'll let them set for at least a couple weeks before I go deciding. I've got some ideas. We numbered the pairs with a grease pen so I know which will fit together. All of it was sharp, but I had to stop due to pocket book. My 12 year old son was with me and when we started talking about the boards speaking to us, he gave us both a funny look. I then had to explain how I was not hearing voices in the truest sense, but getting ideas! It was hilarious. He's going to give me the curly cherry at 3$ bf if I'm willing to take a majority of the stack. I'm considering it. I'm going back next week end to look at it. He cuts stickers the stuff in his yard for a year and then dries in the kiln. I asked him where he gets it, and he says everybody knows him, so they call him to come and get it either down or in the way. How do you like that! He then quarters the logs and has a sawyer come to his property and cut it. He's retired and an interesting character. I know he's always willing to teach me when I show up on how to cut lumber and now how to dry it. I'm hoping this is something I might start as I get closer to retirement. Bones,
I have a question on the board titled "PA cherry wanted", as I am looking for sources. However, I haven't heard from you. So, where do you buy your cherry?
Jim
Mine is almost all local stuff here in IL and some across the river in MO. I saw your post but you indicated you wanted PA cherry so I did not respond. I looked for your profile, but you have not filled out where you are at. If you are close to STL, maybe we could pool some resources and get a price break. I know the PA stuff is the best. Good luck on the search. If you do find successfully complete your quest, let me know. I'm still looking for 125-250 BF of FS. Bones,
I'm just west of the Ohio line - quite a ways from STL. If you have read the responses I have received, you have seen what appear to be some really good sources for PA cherry. We are taking a little trip in April, so I think we will just swing through PA and check out two or three of these places. I would really like to see the lumber before I buy. Besides, we will be taking my F-150 so we can just bring it home with us and save the shipping.

That sounds like the ticket! Good luck!Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
bones,
Quick find your local woodaholics anonymous meeting and practice saying this, "Hello my name is bones and I'm a woodaholic"
Failing to do that will have you so badly jonesing out on wood that suddenly you'll find yourself owning 50,000+ bd.ft. of wood.
Those pushers er, sawmill operators can be insidious.

The problem is, I don't want to get better. I guess that's the first sign of a problem! My wife is not helping. When I explained I had to bring them home even though I did not know how they will be used yet, she replied "No problem, let me think about it". I guess you could say she's an enabler! The struggle goes on!Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
bones,
It starts so innocent,, with just a few boards.. then suddenly your pusher (er sawmill will have a deal too good to pass on and next thing you know you'll have to park your cars outside while $300.00 worth of wod stays inside.
the next warning sign will be when you have to sticker the wood outdoors because you ahev no more room inside.. .........
Hello my name is Frenchy and I'm a woodaholic It's been X days since I last bought some wood.
