I have made some boot benchs and adirondack side tables out of pine and used Sears Weatherbeater Ultra when I painted them. Its about $22.00 a gallon and has polyurethane added to it plus it comes with a lifetime guarantee. No primer is needed unless you want to use a sealer. Never had any problems with it. When I have to stain I use Valspar severe weather stain (Lowes carries it) and had projects out in the weather for 8 years or so. No problems there either.

Dave -
Thanks very much. I'll try the Sears paint.
One follow-on question: Since the pine I'm using is basic yellow (not pressure treated), do you think that a primer (sealer) is necessary?
Again thanks -

Jerrycatz,
You should prime before painting. Sealing (ie, sanding sealer) is a different product altogether. Try a Kilz primer for exterior or go with the Sears brand that's suggested on the paint can. You may need to use the Sears to not void a warranty, but I'm not sure.
Best,
Seth
